Lyndon Johnson was born and raised in Texas. He was the oldest of five children. His family lived in a small town. Johnson went to school in a one-room school.

Lyndon Johnson did not do well in school. He could not go to college because of poor grades. Johnson worked odd jobs for three years.

After three years, Johnson did go to college. He became a teacher but not for long. Johnson began working for a congressman. He liked working in government. In 1934, Lyndon married Lady Bird. They had two daughters.

In 1937, Johnson was elected to the U.S. Congress. He became a U.S. senator in 1948. Johnson was elected vice-president in 1960.

Lyndon Johnson became president after the tragic death of John F. Kennedy. He took his oath of office in an airplane.

Johnson wanted to turn the United States into the Great Society. He wanted the United States to be a place where everyone could get an education. He did not want anyone to be poor. He also wanted all people to get along. He signed a law that gave black people many rights they did not have before.

While Johnson was president, the United States was fighting in the Vietnam War. The American people did not like this war. President Johnson felt bad that he couldn’t end the war. He decided not to run for president again.

Johnson died of a heart attack in 1973.
