James Earl Carter liked to be called Jimmy.
He thought that he was a simple country boy. This was not really true.
Carter was very smart. He studied nuclear physics. He was the first president to graduate from the United States Naval Academy.
After college, Jimmy Carter married Rosalyn. They had four children.
Jimmy Carter was an officer in the navy for seven years. After the navy, he went into politics. He was a state senator. Then he was governor of Georgia. He was a successful peanut farmer.
Jimmy Carter elected President in 1976. Helping people was important to President Carter. While president, he taught Sunday bible school. He helped the countries of Israel and Egypt sign their first peace treaty.
Jimmy Carter was a speed-reader. He could read 2,000 words a minute! He usually read two or three books a week while he was president.
Today, no longer president, Jimmy Carter travels around the world. He helps to make peace between countries. In 2002, Carter was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize.
Carter helps to build houses for the homeless. He does this for an organization called Habitat for Humanity.
Carter has written many books. Many of the books are about helping poor people around the world.
