Judy Blume is a very popular author. Her books are known for being funny and honest. When children choose books to receive awards, they often choose Blume’s books because they enjoy them so much.

Blume’s parents helped Judy to love books and reading. As a girl, she loved the Betsy-Tacy series by Maud Hart Lovelace. Blume spent time alone dreaming, thinking, and playing. She believes that time was important. It shaped her as a writer.

Judy Blume has written more than 20 books for children and adults. She spends more than a year writing each one. Blume says you must write what you care about. She reads her work aloud to be sure it sounds true. She likes rewriting the best. She rewrites each of her books three times before turning it in to her editor.

Many people praise Judy Blume’s books. Others judge them to be too open and free-spoken. Blume actively works to protect the freedom to read. She believes it is wrong to ban any book.
