Africa is the second largest continent in the world. The Atlantic Ocean borders Africa on the west side. On the east side is the Indian Ocean. The longest river in the world is in Africa. It is the Nile River. Mount Kilimanjaro is Africa’s highest mountain. Many people try to climb it. The Great Rift Valley in Africa can be seen from space!

The Sahara is the world’s largest desert. It covers the top of Africa. The desert is very hot and rocky.

Africa has forests in the middle. The land is hilly and green. There are also some jungles in Africa.

Grasslands, called savannas, cover the lower part of Africa. The savanna has grasses, small trees, and bushes.

Africa has many animals. Camels live in the dry deserts. They do not need much water. Monkeys and birds live in the forests. Hippos live near the rivers and lakes. Crocodiles live there, too.

The savanna has most of the large animals. Giraffes live on the grasslands. The elephant is the largest land animal in the world. It also lives on the savanna. Zebras, rhinos, and antelope live in herds on the savanna. Lions, hyenas, and cheetahs follow the herds. They hunt the herds for food.

Africa has many cultures. It also has some of the oldest groups of people in the world. The African people began to move to other continents. Other people in the world moved into Africa. Africa is now home to many ethnic groups.
