A volcano is a cone shaped mountain. It is part of the earth’s crust. Lava, ashes and hot gases come out of a volcano when it erupts, or blows up. Magma is a kind of rock that is deep inside the earth. When this rock erupts, it is called lava.

Lava is liquid and moves like syrup. Lava is very hot until it has time to cool down. A volcano can be above land or under the water. A volcano can erupt many times. Some volcanoes have caused a lot of harm to people and land. The largest volcano on earth is in Hawaii. The name of this volcano is Mauna Loa. It is 6 miles tall!
