Topic(s):   Landforms

A piece of land with water all around it is called an island. There are two kinds of islands. There is a continental island and an oceanic island. An island can be formed in different ways.

One way is by a volcano. A volcano can erupt under the ocean. Lava, hot liquid rock, builds up under the water. As the volcano erupts over and over the lava builds up and forms an island. This leads to land sticking out above the water.

Islands can also be formed by erosion between two masses of land. The erosion leads them to separate or split. The Hawaii Islands are an example of islands. The whole continent of Australia is an island.
