Mountain
Topic(s):   Landforms

A mountain is a very tall part of the earth. A mountain is much higher than a hill. A mountain has rocky land and steep sides. It can have a pointed or rounded top. A valley is the land between two mountains. A mountain protects the valley from bad weather because it is so tall.

Volcanoes, erosion and the uplift of the earth’s crust form all mountains. There are more mountains in the ocean than on land! Some islands are really just the tops of a mountain sticking up out of the water.

The tallest mountain is Mt. Everest. An example of a mountain chain is the Rocky Mountains. The Rocky Mountains were the home to many Native Americans.
