Supersaurus (SUE-per-SORE-us) was a really long dinosaur. It had a bulky body. It had a very long neck and a small head. Its tail was long and thin.
Scientists are not sure how Supersaurus held its neck. Some think it used its long neck to reach leaves on tall trees. It could have reached 50 feet up. Others think it could not raise its heavy neck. It would browse over a large area. It would eat shorter things like ferns. Either way, a supersaurus had to eat all the time. It may have eaten hundreds of pounds of food a day.
Predators were not much of a threat to a healthy supersaurus. It was too big. It may have used its tail as a whip. Supersaurus had five toes. One was a thumb claw. That might have been used for protection, too.
Vivian Jones first discovered Supersaurus in 1972. It was found in Colorado, United States. Only a few bones from supersaurus were found. Other bones were dug up at that site, too. Some were thought to be from ultrasaurus. That was a mistake. The bones were really from supersaurus and other dinosaurs. There is no ultrasaurus.
In 1996, a more complete supersaurus skeleton was found in Wyoming, United States. It was named Jimbo. Now scientists can make better guesses about supersaurus. It was probably related to apatosaurus. Its stomach could have used stones to help grind food. It may have moved in herds. It might have lived 100 years.
