The roadrunner is a bird that can be found in the deserts of the United States, Mexico and Central America. It is the state bird for New Mexico.

The roadrunner is a black and white bird with a long tail and large beak. It would rather walk or run than fly. It will only fly when it is in danger or going downhill. It can only stay airborne for a few seconds because of its heavy body.

The sound it makes is called a coo. The female roadrunner can lay eggs at about three years old. The female will lay two to 12 eggs at a time. The eggs take 18 to 20 days to hatch. Both the male and female roadrunner takes turns sitting on the eggs. Both of them take care of the babies once they are born.

A roadrunner can walk or run up to 17 miles an hour. It is fast enough to catch and eat a rattlesnake. It swallows its prey whole.
