The bactrian camel lives in the Gobi Desert. The desert can be very hot or very cold. The camel can travel a long time without water or food. It is very strong and tough.

The bactrian camel has two humps filled with fat. It has padded feet and thick skin at the knees. Its shaggy fur keeps it warm in the winter. The camel sheds its thick coat in the hot summer weather. The bactrian camel can be black, brown or white.

A camel has special muscles in its nose. The muscles close tightly when there is a sand storm. Long eyelashes and furry ears also protect them from the sand.

A camel’s mouth can chew plants with thorns. The bactrian camel also eats grass, leaves, and bushes. It can drink many gallons of water at one time.

A camel will bite or kick when it is bothered. It is grumpy. People use a camel to do work. The camel can pull a plow. It can carry people and heavy loads.
