The grizzly bear is a large brown bear. This bear is sometimes called a brown bear. It lives in the mountain ranges and forests around the world.
A male grizzly bear can be eight feet tall. The female grizzly is somewhat smaller. The name grizzly comes from silver-white hairs that grow in their brown coats.
These bears have a large head with a long, wide nose. It has a hump of muscle between its shoulders. This makes the front legs very strong for digging. Long claws on its front paws also help in digging. Its long claws help it to catch fish and small animals.
In warmer weather, a grizzly bear will eat all the food it can find. It needs lots of stored energy to sleep all winter. Each bear will dig a hole in a hillside for its den. It sleeps in the den for up to seven months. It doesn’t even go to the bathroom.
The female grizzly gives birth in her sleep. She usually has two cubs. Each newborn is the size of a rat. It is blind and has no fur. A cub must find its way to the mother’s milk. The cub stays with its mother for two to three years.
An adult grizzly bear lives and travels alone. The grizzly bear eats many different kinds of meat, plants, or berries. The grizzly is good at catching fish!
A grizzly bear is dangerous. If it is surprised, it gets angry and may attack.
