The raccoon is common. It can be found all over the United States. There are only a few states where it cannot be found.

A raccoon lives in forests and moist woodlands. It lives in farmlands and cities. It likes to build its home in old trees and caves.

You can recognize a raccoon by its black mask. It has small paws. Its paws look and work like human hands. A raccoon walks slowly. But if needed to, it can run really fast. It is a very good swimmer.

The raccoon is active at night. It eats many foods. It eats fruits, berries, insects, and rodents. In city areas, it looks for food by prying open garbage cans. It is creative and smart.
