The porcupine can be found all around the United States. It lives in forests, deserts, and woodlands.

A porcupine is covered with 30,000 quills. The sharp quills protect it. When it is bothered, it turns and defends itself by using the quills to stick the other animal. Its fur is brown colored. It also has strong legs.

A porcupine makes its home in a burrow or a hollow log. It is slow and clumsy on land. It is a good climber. A porcupine can spend an entire day in a tree. At night, it leaves its home to search for food.

Porcupines eat mostly insects and plants.
