Dr. Seuss was really his pen name. Theodor Seuss Geisel was his full name. Theodor Seuss Geisel was the author of The Cat in the Hat and more than forty other books for children.

Theodor Geisel was born in 1904. While in college, he worked on a humor magazine. He later drew ads and worked as a cartoonist. Geisel helped to make training films for soldiers during World War II. He continued to draw cartoons.

Dr. Seuss wrote his first book while aboard an ocean liner. The text’s rhythm repeats the pulse of the ship’s engines. A book editor challenged Seuss to write a book for young readers. He told Seuss he could use only 250 words. The result was The Cat in the Hat, a book with only 220 words. Children and parents loved it.

Readers know Dr. Seuss for his witty pictures and playful words. His books also have important ideas. Peace, taking care of the earth, and getting along with one another are all topics in Seuss’ books.

Dr. Seuss is one of America’s most famous authors. He won many awards, including an Oscar and two Emmys. Although he died in 1991, he remains a bestselling children’s author.
