Acid Rain
Topic(s):   Weather

Acid rain is any form of precipitation that has acid in it. There is acid rain, acid snow, and acid fog. Do you know what acid is? Two examples of acid are lemon juice and battery acid. Think of how bad rain can be with battery acid mixed in.

People cause acid rain. We use electricity and burn coal. When we use these things, small bits of acid form and go into the air. This mixes with precipitation and becomes acid rain.

All acid rain is bad for the environment. Over time, it harms everything. The fish in our rivers, streams, and lakes will die. Acid rain also hurts our forests. Trees cannot live or grow when acid rain falls on them. Acid rain affects human beings. People have trouble breathing when there is acid rain. Buildings and paint also decay when acid rain falls.

What can you do to stop acid rain? We have done a lot since 1970. This is when we began learning about acid rain. We can always do more. There are many things you can do that will help our environment. You can make sure your parents only run the clothes washer and dishwasher when it is full. You can turn off lights in empty rooms. These will help use less electricity. You can also walk or carpool when you are going places. This will use less gas that harms our environment.
