Susan Brownell Anthony was born in Massachusetts. She had six brothers and sisters. She learned to read and write when she was three years old. When Susan was six years old, the family moved to New York.

Susan was a Quaker. A Quaker believed boys and girls should be treated the same. Susan tried to go to a public school. The teacher would not teach a girl. Her father taught her, instead. Later, she went to an all girls’ school.

In 1839, Susan B. Anthony became a teacher. She taught for over 10 years. She quit teaching to work for the right to vote for everyone. Susan B. Anthony was against slavery. After the Civil War, she worked to get black people the right to vote. Others only wanted to let men vote. (In those days, no women were allowed to vote.)

Susan B. Anthony wanted to make sure that women did not suffer just because they were girls. During her life, Susan B. Anthony started groups to help women. These groups tried to get women the right to vote. She made many speeches. She wrote a newspaper. Susan even helped write a series of books.

Susan B. Anthony wanted to make sure women got the right to vote. She died 14 years before this became a law. Anthony was the first woman to appear on a U.S. coin. It is called the Susan B. Anthony dollar.
