A chicken is a bird. It is raised for its meat and eggs. The adult chicken has a crest on its head called a comb. The hanging flap of skin under the beak is called a wattle. There are probably more chickens in the world than any other bird. A group of chickens is called a flock or brood.

A hen will lay about 12 eggs during a short period of time. She will then set on, or incubate, the eggs. The hen must turn the eggs in the nest. If the egg is not turned, the baby chick could stick to the shell. The chick may be born with a defect if this happens. A baby chick hatches after 21 days. The hen will then lead the chicks to food and water. She will guard the chicks for several weeks.

A chicken can make a good pet. It can be tamed by feeding it by hand.
